Subject verb agreement means that verb agrees with the subject according to number and person. Verb behaves with the change of number and person.

Let’s know some rules of subject verb agreement.

1.When subject is singular, verb takes the form of singular. When subject is plural, verb takes the form of plural.

Example:

There is a book on the table.

We are very happy for our independence.

Here is and are take the form of singular and plural form respectively.

2.Verb takes the form of singular if any subject comes after each, every, any, everyone, someone, anything and nothing.

Example:

Each boy in the class has an English book.

Everybody is sleeping in the room.

Here has and is take the form of singular form.

3.The + adjective+plural verb (If adjective indicates a specific part of the society)

Example:

The honest are always happy.

The old are generally respected by all.

Here are and are take the form of plural form because the honest and the old indicate a specific part of the society.

4.If two or more subjects are connected by ‘and’ verb takes the form of plural form.

Example:

Rakib and Shakib are two brothers.

You, he and I are guilty.

5.When two or more singular nouns indicate same person, thing or idea, verb takes the form of singular form.

Example:

The chief architect and president of IAB (Bangladesh Institute of Architect) is the chief guest of this annual function.

Slow and steady wins the race.

6.When two or more singular subjects are connected by “or” “nor” “either–or”  “neither–nor”verb takes the form of singular.

Example:

Either Shakib or Rakib was present in the meeting.

Neither you nor he was absent in the meeting.

7.A collective noun takes the verb as singular form when it is meant as a whole.

Example:

The cricket team was defeated by opponent.

One lac BDT isn’t sufficient for me.

8.A collective noun takes the verb as plural form when it is meant as a separate things.

Example:

The jury are divided in the case.

The committee are divided in their opinions.

9. A lot of , a group of, and a number of takes the verb as plural form.

Example:

A lot of workers are working in the factory.

A group of players are playing in the field.

10.There are many nouns that are singular in form but plural in meaning they take the verb as plural form.

Example:

The crowd are agitated.

One dozen make twelve.

11.There are some nouns that looks plural but singular in meaning take the verb as singular.

Example:

Politics isn’t favorite to me.

My monthly wages is enough for me.

12.If a plural noun is placed with a real singular subject with the help of “of”, the verb takes the form of singular.

Example:

Either of the two buses goes past the university.

Each of the boys is meritorious.

13.When subject joins with “with”, “together with” and “as well as”, verb agrees with the first subject.

Example:

Rakib as well as Ramat Ali deserves the prize

I together with my father is selling cloths.

14.If one is used as subject, it’s pronoun will be one (not his/her).

Example:

One should do one’s duties.

15.When we can’t determine sex(gender), we use masculine gender as pronoun.

Each must do his best.

Everybody is busy with in his work.
